There’s a free keyword research tool at http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/gtrends/ that can help you to find the keywords for your website. If you’re not sure how to use this keyword research tool, there is information on this blog itself which I’ve posted earlier that explained about how to use this tool. Once you’ve found your suitable keywords, you need to check the PageRank on your competitor’s website that uses your keywords. But before that you need to install Google’s toolbar into your computer which can be downloaded at http://www.google.com/toolbar/. This toolbar will help you to check on your competitor’s page rank.

This is how the toolbar looks like after the installation and located at the top page when you browse the internet.

Let me give an example of what you should do.

Let’s say you are creating a site related to guitar. Your suitable keywords for your website are ‘free guitar music’, ‘free easy guitar music’ and ‘free guitar music for beginners’.

Head over to Google and type in one of your keyword into the search box. That will bring the list of your competitor’s websites.

Click on the #1 website and check its PageRank on the Google’s toolbar. See the red arrow.

If you want to use the keyword for your website, you need to be sure that your competitor’s website has the PageRank of 4 and below. But if the website has a PageRank of 6 and above, it’s probably not good to shoot for that keyword yet until you build some traffics on other less competitive keywords.

Once you have finished analyzing all your keywords, you can now start to collect your keyword related contents and create your website.

This is what you need to do when you start to design your website.

Step 1

Select a page title for your website which includes all your keywords. Based on your selected keywords that is ‘free guitar music’, ‘free easy guitar music’ and ‘free guitar music for beginner’, the ideal title for your website will be “Free And Easy Guitar Music For Beginners” which has the combination of all your keywords and at the same time cutting down the total number of words.

It’s not best to write “Free Guitar Music And Free Easy Guitar Music And Free Guitar Music For Beginners”. This is way too long for your title. Even though it has all your keywords but Google gives more weight on titles that has least amount of words.

Step 2

Add <h1> header tags with your primary keyword. You can think of your <h1> header tag as the title of your content which contain your main keywords and should be place at the top left hand side or top middle portion of your page.

Let me show you an example.

If you’re using FrontPage website editor, all you have to do is to highlight the text you want to make as <h1> header tag, then click the dropdown button (the red box) and select “Heading 1”.

Step 3

Add <h2> header tags with your secondary keyword. This can be thought of as a sub heading of your page which contains the second most important keyword and place towards top half of your webpage.

Step 4

Create the contents for your webpage and try to sprinkle your keywords throughout your copy but don’t over do it though. Write your contents in a natural way but try to include your keywords per 1-2 paragraphs.

Step 5

Use bolding, italicizing and underlining on some of your keywords in your content.

Step 6

Add your remaining keywords into <alt> image tag to the very top image in your website. This could be your website’s header graphic. You can even do the same thing to images if you have it on the body of your websites.

If you’re using FrontPage website editor, right click on the image, click ‘Picture Properties’, then click on ‘General’. You’ll find a box to write in your keywords. See example below.

That’s it, you’re done.

This process is also known as onpage optimization which can help to boost your website search engine ranking. Most people made a mistake by not doing these steps before they start creating their website and when they realize about the mistakes, they have to start all over again from the beginning, wasting a lot of time.

When you are analyzing your keywords it’s best to check on the top 5 websites from the list.

Tool #1 – Domain Name And Web Hosting

These are the basic tools for your online business that you should never go without.

Here’s why.

You need a point of contact that allows people to know where you are and a place to promote your product and distribute your promotional materials.

How much will it cost you?

A domain name will cost you under $10 a year.

But before you rush for your domain name, here’re some tips that you might want to take note on how to choose an ideal domain name:

- Keep the name as short as possible and avoid using special characters such as hyphens and underbars, so people can easily remember and type.

- A product name or your website name could be your domain name so when people think of your product or your website, they’ll know where to go.

- Aim for domain names with relevant keywords. This can give you the advantage in your search engines optimization.

- Choose ‘.com’ domains, it’ll cost more than other extensions but people have long associated with ‘.com’ on the internet. When people are searching for a website, they’ll usually type the website address with the ‘.com’ extension.

For a hosting account, there’re lots of options available. For a start, you can just grab a cheap hosting account that cost about $3 or less. Maybe you might want to try 3ix.com which I have been using for years and they even offers web hosting for only $1.

There’re places which provide free hosting however there’re limitations in these free accounts. But it’s still ok starting up using free hosting if you’re struggling for a start up capital but I would advise getting a paid account when your budget permits.

There’re also deals where you can get free domain names when purchase a hosting account for one flat fee but the disadvantage of these offers that you don’t have control over the administration of your domain name and if you decide to cancel your hosting account you’ll also lose your domain name. So if you’re using this option, you need to stick to it.

Tool #2 – Site Templates Or HTML Editor

Obviously you need to have contents on your site and a page to display it. So you need page editor software.

The good news is that many web hosting account provide free page editor where you can create and edit your website right in your browser.

But most marketers prefer to have it installed on their computer, and if you do a search on Google, you may find both free and paid software available.

If you’re looking for better option you could grab the top notch software like Frontpage or Dreamweaver that are really good but it’ll cost you.

This is one of the most important business tools among all the others. So be sure to get a good quality autoresponder.

There’re 2 types of autoresponder and they are:

1. Autoresponder scripts.

You pay one time to purchase the scripts and you can use for as long as you wish. This is a money saver option but you might have a slight problem. The scripts need to be installing into your hosting account where you might find it hard if you don’t know how to do. For those who are using the free hosting, I’m afraid this will not work for you.

Another problem that you might encounter is should anything goes wrong with the autoresponder, you’ve to solve it on your own. In other words you’ve to maintain the autoresponder yourself.

2. Autoresponder provider.

Signing up with the autoresponder provider is the most preferred option by many marketers. All you need to do is to sign up for the service with the autoresponder provider and you can start using immediately.

There is no installing and maintaining on your part, just creating an account and it’s ready to use. Should anything go wrong, just call them and they’ll handle it for you.

But the service comes with a monthly fee and may also be a problem to some beginners, especially when capital is an issue. But if you ask me, I would recommend this option.

There’re sites that provide free autoresponder services but these free services will give you headaches down the line. It’s not well maintained and it may not work well, but still, there is nothing wrong using the free autoresponder.

But just to let you know, I’ve faced problems with the free autoresponder I’ve once used so try to avoid if possible.

Tool #4 – Link Tracking Software

Whenever you advertise your links, you need to track those links and see the results of your promotion.

You need to know the effectiveness of your marketing campaign. You need to know which advertisements really motivate people to click your link so you can make changes if it’s not doing well.

You’ll also need to know the effectiveness of the place where you advertise. You don’t want to waste your time advertising in a place that’s not giving you any results.

It’s really important to track your marketing campaign so you’ll know what works and what doesn’t.

There’re a lot of options for a tracking solution both free and paid. No matter which solution you intend to use, make sure it does a good job tracking your links.

I used a script called ‘Fast Click’ which I’ve downloaded for free but it have to be install in your hosting account. I’m not good in installing scripts but this script is really simple to install and there’s a guide given for installation and usage procedure. So far till now it has been working well for me.

This is really a fantastic tool. It can give you an idea of which niche that you can dominate at a profit. It also gives you the information of where you can find the products that you can be affiliated with.

Before you can start using this tool, you need to find good keywords that are related to your targeted niche. Keywords are words that are used by people that they typed in the search box in search engines. It can be a single word or a set of words.

Let’s take an example, and you are going to sell guitar on the internet. So the keyword that you will use can be ‘guitar’. Now head to the keyword tool and type in ‘guitar’ in the search box and click ‘Hit Me’. See example below.

The tool will list out 100 keywords related to the word ‘guitar’. Now let’s see the amount of searches that the word ‘guitar’ received.

It shows that in the past, it received about 6,794 searches. That is great and a niche that you would want to target, but this is only the first step.

Now you need to check on its competition, so click the icon on the right.

This is what you’ll see.

You know that the word ‘guitar’ already received 6,794 searches in the past, that’s the first great news. If your website is placed at #1 spot, you are going to receive a potential 65,968 visitors a day, that’s the second great news.

To be in #1 spot you need to compete with 184,000,000 websites, that’s not good and way too much competitors. It’s not that you can’t sell guitar but you’ll have a hard time competing against your competition and you need a lot of work to get your website to #1 spot.

So you should try something else. Let’s take another business approach. Maybe you would like to try selling music that can be played with a guitar.

So let’s go back to the main page and scroll down the list and check for any related keywords.

There’s keyword ‘free guitar music’ in the list. Now do the same thing as you did earlier.

This is what you’ll see.

This keyword received 393 searches in the past, and in #1 spot you will get 220 visitors a day with 22,700 websites to compete. This is wonderful, now you’ve found a niche that you can target at. The tool even recommends targeting a niche that has less than 30,000 competitions and more than 100 visitors a day.

Now you can start your internet business. You could set up a membership site where your site is going to provide free guitar music. You let your visitors to sign up for free and give them the option to upgrade their membership with a monthly fee so upgraded members will receive more quality items like training courses to hone up the skills to play better or the latest music. You can also include promoting guitars in your membership sites so members can also buy a guitar from you when they need it.

This keyword research tool recommends you to dominate a niche that have less than 30,000 competing websites and more than 100 visitors a day, but I would not take this recommended numbers too seriously. If you would follow exactly what the tools suggested, it’ll take you some time to find a niche.

I would still go for a niche that have more than 30,000 competitions but not more than 100,000 competing websites, and less than 100 potential visitors but not lesser than 50.
